The White Flies

The vegetables were full of white flies, just full of them. I guess the formula wasn't working but it was highly recommended by the reviews online, why wasn't it working? Was I using it incorrectly? I am not sure. This was the daily torture I endure when trying to grow food of my own during these hard times.

The economy of the world was shattered and everyone was left to fend for themselves. For a while now, things such as basic necessities were disappearing little by little, no one cared or bothered to pay attention until it was too late. Now, we have to hunt for our food, with such high demand of it, there was barely anything left so everyone had to be forced to become vegetarian. It was such a sad reality but here we are and we must survive.

There was also no more electricity, we had become obsolete with technology as there was nothing to hold them together. What's the point? The world is in ruins and we had bigger priorities. In a way, it was a relief as you won't be seeing kids on their phones twenty four seven looking like zombies. Unfortunately, the more vulnerable people would perish sooner than others. This is my world and it was only the beginning.

We had come accustomed to grow our veggies with a lot of care but with a lot of issues too. As I mentioned earlier, the white flies would destroy a lot of them so we need an effective way to get rid of them. repellents could only go so far but I understand that fighting them off would be a challenge. That's not the only thing we had to fight off, thieves of nearing homes would want to steal our food over and over so what's the solution? To take turns standing guard. This old home only had two habitats, me and Emily. We met while the world was going wild and somehow we managed to trust each other in order to survive. It was that kind of feeling when you meet someone and you get a good vibe of them. She definitely showed enthusiasm and was quite a looker. Blond hair, blue eyes, and a petite figure, why would I want someone like that to help me survive? Guess it could have its advantages some way. I honestly did felt sorry for her, so we joined forces.

Emily and I fought off a lot of people but the most difficult one happened a couple of weeks ago. These freaks of nature came with the hunger of a million! We had a nice batch of tomatoes growing and it was her turn to keep an eye on them in the backyard. Of course, we had built a greenhouse that would connect to the back side of the house in order to keep everything safe, but stuff like that matter very little to the desperation of hunger. Furthermore, we didn't have any deadly weapons ourselves except machetes. Two freaks would try to sneak in through the side of the greenhouse, I was resting a bit in the bedrooms but I felt I always had to have an eye open when Emily was guarding our goodies, it was just a survival instinct, I also felt the same way when I was guarding while she slept. One of them came up to Emily to ask if they could borrow some tools for gardening, it was an older lady who looked pleasant but one couldn't be so trustworthy, you couldn't trust anyone. Emily replied 'We don't have any tools to give, please be on your way' The lady asked again and then dropped on her knees. That caught Emily off guard so she went to look if she was okay, as she went over to her someone from the shadows came and ripped through the greenhouse door on the other side, as the old lady held Emily's hand so she couldn't move the other individual rushed to her with a knife, Emily tried to move out of the way but got stabbed on the right shoulder.

With all the commotion, I was already by the door, witnessing a couple of freaks trying to not only take the food we had to survive, but kill my partner. I furiously ran to the freak with the knife and kicked it out of his hand, he would stab me with it in the process, but the adrenaline would not make me feel a single ounce of pain and pass right through it, getting rid of him with a rage. The old lady let go off Emily and ran off into the darkness while the other freak ran off the other way back from where he came from. It was a close call, we usually just scare invaders even before they try anything but we fell for the old hurt lady trick. Overall, we were alright, we were hurt, but we survived. People tend to get more aggressive as time goes on with hunger, it is a sad world we live in.

The white flies wouldn't just leave our plants, they were as desperate as the freaks trying to steal food. I feel that's why they focused on our crops. With no other choice, I would have to venture out and find a new solution for them. As the world's economy had completely disappeared, a way to get things was through trade. Food obviously being the main factor. One potato would run you so much, it was ridiculous but even more valuable than gold. I would go to our stash and get half a potato, this would be enough to try a new repellent for the plants. I figure that the repellent we got prior was a fake which is why it didn't work. That's the last time I would head to that part of town. I would head out and find a solution for survival, Emily stayed to guard.

I made haste into the other part of town, the one that I know had some better materials and found a gardening depot which are houses we call in which we can trade food for supplies to help us grow more food! It was great, but also more reliable. With half a potato I felt I could get a good deal on repellent. The owner who I dealt with before was quite old but wise. Short man, missing teeth, and with a horrible stench, It was the norm for a lot of people after all a lot of us couldn't take showers as often, water could only be acquired from the river banks. I got my repellent, and went on my way. I hadn't gone to this old man because he is kind of expensive but there was not choice, shopping around is not preferable as when we could just go on our phones and order with a couple of presses. As I'm leaving the old man says 'Survival is nothing but temporary' As I look back at him and replied 'We must survive old man'. He looked back with a grin.

I made my way back to the house, it wasn't a long journey and no one would stop me since I'm not carrying food with me, but I did had to jump into the river bank so I could fetch water for the crops and ourselves. The water wasn't the cleanest, but we had no choice. Finally, getting the water was a breeze mainly because I didn't had to talk to anyone and made my way back. I finally arrived and called out for Emily 'Hey I'm back!' but there was no reply. I go out back to see our bedroom which was untouched. No sign of Emily. I went to look for her into the trees by the yard, nothing. Emily was nowhere to be found, not even a sign of struggle. I noticed the crops had been picked out... everything is gone. Our emergency food was also gone. 'Was I betrayed by her?' I thought. I rummaged through all our stuff and clothes to try to find anything about her but nothing. I finally heard a yell outside and ran out. It was Emily with five other freaks. All holding long knives. I was unarmed, I looked straight at her as she's standing with a grin, 'Why?' She looks at me and says 'Survival is nothing but temporary' As the freaks came at me, I felt broken inside but not hopeless.

I was left for dead with multiple wounds, blood everywhere. At this point, I wasn't going to fight it anymore. My time has come....just take me, they had taken everything of value. Perishing was the only thing left for me. As I lay there looking at the sky, I thought of the good times and how much we took for granted our lives before the world came crashing down. Maybe I can go back, maybe I can do it all again. I closed my eyes, I didn't see a light anymore, but a hand dragging, it was hope.
